The Atom Bomb Ends the War
By Andres and Lawrence
The Manhattan project was led by general Leslie Graves. The actual project was researched and directed by J. Robert Oppenheimer, and it was the best kept secret of the war. The first test of the A-bomb was conducted on July 16th, 1945 at Alamogordo, New Mexico. The test was successful. on July 25th, 1945, President Truman gave orders to drop two atom bombs on Japan, in an attempt to end the war. The US warned Japan first, telling them that they faced "prompt and utter destruction." On August 6th, a B-29 bomber dropped the first A-bomb, code-named "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, a Japanese military base. Almost every building was blown to dust. However, the Japanese still hesitated to surrender. On August 9th, the second bomb, "Fat Man", was dropped on Nagasaki, leveling half the city. Horrified by the destruction and loss of lives, Emperor Hirohito formally surrendered on September 2nd. By the end of the year, over 200,000 people had died as a result of radiation and injuries from the explosion.

Nice picture, we can't believe how big the explosion was and how destructive it was.
ReplyDeletecool picture, the destruction of japanese land and lives is terrible. we were unaware that it only took a few months to test and use the a-bomb
ReplyDeleteWell, yes, the destruction of Japanese lives and land was terrible in the sense that it was incredibly powerful, but i would not say that it was terrible from a strategic point of view. There would have been a lot more suffering if we had chosen to invade instead.
ReplyDeleteAs to the article, very concise facts, and good catch to cite your picture.
Dang. Nice picture. It didn't even occur to me that putting a picture was an option. I was totally scrolling through all those long paragraphs. And BAM. there's a humungo mushroom cloud.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's aweful.
Just HOW did they come up with "Little Boy" and "Fat Man?" I'm not really sure what other people think, but those are insanely suspicious names for government projects.
Pretty good picture, more original than the others with information. Gives a vivid image of the bombing on Hiroshima & Nagasaki. The atomic bomb destroyed so many lives, that future generations were also affected by it too.
ReplyDeleteThat picture is extremely powerful.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if the Japanese had surrendered after the first bomb then those 200,000 people wouldn't have had to die.
Nice job. The picture is really amazing. It adds to your project a lot! Good job!
ReplyDeleteVery detailed information with all of the code names and the people involved. Also, at the risk of redundency, awesome picture!
